Healthy Hot List - Birthday Cake Flavor - By Give It A Whirl Girl

Birthday Cake Flavor – Protein Galore – Healthy Hot List

Here is another edition of my Healthy Hot List featuring all health food items that are birthday cake flavor! Protein galore over there today!! I am completely obsessed with this flavor profile right now. Possibly because birthday cake flavor conjures up some great childhood memories. Who doesn’t love birthday cake? I feel as though that is a universal flavor that most people can get on-board with. Often times in life our first taste of sweets and sugar is from the first bite of birthday cake at our first birthday party.

This list is chock ful of birthday cake flavored items that focus on protein. I sure could use a boost in my protein and these items make it convenient to get in your daily recommended intake.

Optimum Nutrition Protein Cake Bites, Whipped Protein Bar, Flavor: Birthday Cake Flavor, 12 Count

I just had to go ahead and put one of my favorite birthday cake flavor items here at the top of the Healthy Hot List. I love these little bite-sized tasty morsels from Optimum Nutrition. Each package contains 3 Cake Bites and each 3-piece serving is going to give you a generous 20 grams of protein. If birthday cake flavor is not your jam you probably won’t be into this list but Optimum Nutrition has some other flavor offerings: Chocolate Dipped Cherry, Red Velvet, New Chocolate Frosted Donut, Mint Chocolate, Peanut Butter, Fruity Cereal, and Blueberry Cheesecake.

Skinny Dipped Almonds – Not Skinny On Taste – Product Review

If you are a health nut and you also love to indulge a bit in a tasty treat then Skinny Dipped Almonds might just be your go-to snack when you are having a snack attack! I just recently had a chance to sample three different flavors of Skinny Dipped Almonds. I tried out the Dark Chocolate Cocoa, Greek Yogurt Pumpkin Spice, and the Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter. Skinny Dipped Almonds come in two additional flavors as well: Dark Chocolate Espresso and Dark Chocolate Raspberry. These three bags of almonds went pretty quick in my home and we all enjoyed these flavors. Consider me a fan for life! I really do need to get my hands on the other flavors.

Skinny Dipped Almonds (Dark Chocolate Cocoa, Greek Yogurt Pumpkin Spice, and Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter)

Not So Skinny Taste

Don’t let the name “Skinny Dipped” fool you because these almonds are certainly not lacking in flavor, in fact, each flavor that I sampled is actually bursting with flavor! Skinny Dipped Almonds are whole roasted almonds that have a hint of maple sugar, a touch of sea salt, and a skinny layer of dark chocolate on them. These are created with ethically-sourced artisan chocolate and organic ingredients. Skinny Dipped Almonds does not use any artificial colors or flavors in their snack.

No funky ingredients… just real food.

Nutritious Nuts

Looking for a protein punch? These almonds are a fantastic source of protein! 15 Skinny Dipped Almonds will give you 4 grams of protein and it is so easy to eat more than 15 of these delicious morsels. I could easily eat an entire bag in one sitting! If you need a boost in fiber, Skinny Dipped Almonds comes in at 2 grams of fiber per serving (15 almonds).

Primal Kitchen Collagen Fuel – Smoothie RECIPE – Tried It Tuesday

For the past couple of days I have been trying out this Primal Kitchen Vanilla Coconut Collagen Fuel. I am really loving this mix and it goes well stirred into coffee, mixed with unsweetened almond milk in a smoothie, or it makes one hell of an awesome smoothie bowl as I will explain below. The taste is incredible as well, which is sometimes hard to come across with a protein powder. Today I will be talking about Primal Kitchen Collagen Fuel and how versatile it is.

First off a little bit of info on Primal Kitchen’s Collagen Fuel. This product contains healthy fats from the coconut and it promotes healthy hair, skin, nails, joints, and also helps repair muscle. This Collagen Fuel is also packed with a whopping 10 grams of protein per 1 scoop serving. If Vanilla Coconut is not your jam they do offer the Collagen Fuel in a delicious chocolate flavor. Each tub of Collagen Fuel will give your 24 individual servings.

20180806_1446351105229381.jpg

Many protein powders on the market contain whey. This mix does not contain any whey, soy, or dairy and it is perfect for those on a paleo diet. You know you are getting a quality product from Primal Kitchen because they only source ingredients from cows that are grass-fed.

The great thing about this Collagen Fuel for me is that it helps promote a healthy gut. It had prebiotic fibers in it. I have been doing more research on health and I am hearing more and more about how important our gut health is and that a gut that is off balance can through your whole system out of whack.

I hope you enjoy this delicious and nutritious smoothie bowl recipe that I came up with for you. This was perfect for a Tried It Tuesday post because not only is the Collagen Fuel new to me but so was the guava. This past weekend was the first time I ever brought home a guava fruit.

Primal Kitchen Collagen Bowl w/ Dragon Fruit and Guava

20180803 1754001238285182 - TGIF! A Visit To Nino Salvaggio's & How I Spent My Friday - Thank Goodness It's FOOD!

TGIF! A Visit To Nino Salvaggio’s & How I Spent My Friday – Thank Goodness It’s FOOD!

My husband has Fridays and Saturdays off work for the time being. We spent the early part of the day cleaning and tidying up our house, it was long overdue. I love spending quality time with my family. Joe leaves for work early in the morning and works long hours so we do not get to see him much during the week. We had an awesome day full of good eats and a little trip to Nino Salvaggio’s.

My daughter and I were also spending more time working on a product review for a popsicle maker. We have been having a blast experimenting with the pop maker. She was so happy yesterday when I gave her a vanilla protein popsicle that I had made with Svelte’s vanilla shake and a few candy sprinkles. You can see her joy for this pop in the image below.

Svelte Pops!

Kiwano Horned Melon

Chloe was happy to also have a kiwano horned melon to nosh on yesterday. We mistakingly got 3 of them in an Instacart order and they let us keep them. They were supposed to be cactus pears. When I called up to inform them that I received the wrong item they sent the wrong item to me AGAIN. They ended up giving me golden dragon fruits. I am going to assume that the Instacart shoppers are a little baffled on an order that involves exotic fruits because they never got that order right.

Sy Thai in St. Clair Shores

We were all craving something spicy last night so we decided we would go to one of our favorite Thai restaurants~ Sy Thai in St Clair Shores, MI. We have been visiting this spot for several years now and we can always rely on the food being fresh and delicious!

We decided we would order a lychee bubble drink and all share. Sy Thai is known for making gigantic bubble drinks. The one we received yesterday may have been the largest one we received to date. It was huge.

Another thing that I love about Sy Thai is their soups that come with the dinner. Many Thai restaurants do not include soups with the dinners. We had hot and sour soup yesterday and me and Joe loved it. My daughter, on the other hand, did not care for it. Hot and sour soup is really not a kid-friendly soup. It has a taste that is hard to describe.

I wanted to try something new yesterday. I also knew that I needed to have some kind of noodle dish. I am a huge fan of Thai basil and I usually enjoy ordering the drunken noodle but I ended up trying out the Karee Basil Noodle. Joe ordered his usual Pad Thai. That is the dish he often goes with. I really enjoyed the flavor of my dish but the rice noodles in there were so thick they were almost like dumplings. I have never in my life had noodles that were that thick!

Our Trip To Nino Salvaggio’s

After our dinner, we wanted to do a bit of shopping at Nino Salvaggio’s. We visited the smaller location in St Clair Shores since that one is the closest to our home. I did not really have any idea what I wanted to come home with. I was pretty much just on a mission to challenge myself to find something new and unusual to take home.

The first thing that really caught my eye when I walked in to Nino Salvaggio’s was the fresh green figs. Oh man… I sure do love my figs. I love the red and green. Nino’s had the green ones in stock so I grabbed a few. I would have loved a whole case but my wallet said no.

I was hoping to find some purple carrots while I was at Nino Salvaggio’s. I have a newfound love for them. I did locate a bag of mini rainbow organic carrots and I could not pass that up. They will make a great side dish for one of my dinners this week. I love roasted carrots with some raw honey drizzled on top. So damn good!

Me and Chloe have been eating a ton of fruit lately, and I mean a lot! We ended up taking home a few interesting fruits that were brand spankin new to us: baby bananas, Forelle pears, guava, midnight rose apriums, and yellow plums.

You can see my haul from Nino Salvaggio’s in the images that follow. Some people get excited about buying new clothes, buying new makeup, or buying a new video game. I get most excited about buying new food!

My little haul from Nino Salvaggio’s

And wowza!~ Nino Salvaggio’s sure has a fantastic bakery. I did not get this cake but it sure looks drool-worthy to me! They have an amazing array of sweets and treats to satisfy your sweet tooth.

20180804_0710161106973380.jpg

Cake from Nino Salvaggio’s

The first fruit that we tried last night from Nino Salvaggio’s was the midnight rose apriums. These are a hybrid fruit that is a mix of plums and apricots. They had a nice firm texture and also a nice rosy hue for the flesh. As far as the taste goes, they were quite sweet but not overly sweet. They had the perfect amount of sweetness to them. I purchased four of these fruits and I do really wish I had more.

After we came home and unloaded the groceries it was time to pick up more food. We had a ClickList order waiting for us at Kroger. Ahhhhhh I sure do love grocery pick up day. At the end of the week the fridge and pantry starts getting bare. I love bringing home my groceries and seeing a fridge and freezer packed to the gills with stuff!

Ticklebelly Pops

I put a fancy little dessert on our grocery list. I have had my eye on these for quite some time now. I got the TickleBelly Carnival Cotton Candy bars. They are cake pops dipped in a cotton candy shell. Oh, sweet heavens were these delish! Our Kroger has a cute display inside of mermaid-ish items and these were part of the display. My whole family loved these. There are 4 in a pack and we each had one. We will all have to fight over who gets the last one! I am definitely going to hunt down more flavors of these bars and give them a whirl ASAP!

20180804_065838-11105967547.jpg

20180804_065907-1177863905.jpg

Today is now Saturday and I am unsure of what the day has in store for us. Maybe the beach with my rescue dog, Stormy? I am also not sure of what we will be feasting upon for dinner tonight. It will likely be steak or another from-scratch pizza. Whatever I do end up making tonight will be fun. I am sure of that!

Do you have any fun plans this weekend? Have you recently tried a new food and fell in love. Let me know in the comments. I sure would love to hear from you. Comments always brighten my day over here!

Fat Stack of Gluten-Free Pancakes With Enjoy Life Foods – Product Review, Recipe, & Giveaway – CLOSED

Yesterday and the day before were both dreary, overcast days in Michigan. I really needed a plateful of something to cheer me up. In times of need, we often turn to comfort food. Pancakes, for me, definitely fit the bill for that! I also decided to inject some color to them for added smiles! I have been opting for more gluten-free food products in my diet. I have been feeling a whole lot better both physically and mentally. I have been keeping track of my diet and I have come to the conclusion that gluten somehow affects my mood and I often feel run down and fatigued. So for now I am just doing my best to avoid it and keep my gluten intake at a minimal amount. I am a big fan of Enjoy Life Foods products. I am currently obsessed with the dark chocolate chips and it is the only brand I buy now. They offer a line of gluten-free, vegan, products that are free from several other allergens (wheat, peanuts, tree nuts, dairy, casein, soy, egg, sesame, sulfites, lupin, mustard, fish, shellfish & crustaceans). Their products are created in an allergen-free facility. You can enjoy their foods with confidence that they will do your body good.

37691243_10156514053779420_2068516297691365376_n

I tried out the pancake and waffle mix a couple times before and my daughter and I loved the finished product. They don’t hold up well for waffles but they do make a wonderful pancake. The taste of these pancakes was on point! I would never even know they were gluten-free because they taste just like regular pancakes.

I wanted to amp it up a bit so I swapped out the water and used Bolthouse Farms Unsweetened Plant Protein Milk instead. An 8 oz serving of this milk is a whopping 10 grams of protein. I also used a mashed banana in the mix to add in some fiber. A banana has approximately 3 grams of fiber.

I also added some Simple Truth natural food coloring to the pancake mix. I am not a fan of artificial dyes in my food so I wanted to give this a whirl. Unfortunately, the colors are not as vibrant as the artificial ones but they are still fun to eat. Next time I make these I will experiment more with the amount I use (probably needed to use more). The batter was colorful and bright but when the pancakes were cooked the color faded. Perhaps you will have more luck with the colors!

Now let’s get busy with the recipe!

37723362_10156514054359420_1377611683609968640_n

Products I used to make the banana protein Enjoy Life Foods pancakes.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups Enjoy Life Pancake & Waffle Mix
  • 1 1/2 cups Bolthouse Farms Plant Protein Milk
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1/2 mashed banana
  • Simple Truth Natural Food Color
  • Pure maple syrup (optional)
  • Candy Sprinkles (optional)

Recipe:

  1. Prepare your batter by placing the mix, milk, and oil into the bowl and stir until no lumps remain.
  2. Mash 1/2 of a ripe banana and then incorporate this into the mix.
  3. Using 6 bowls, place a small amount of batter into each bowl and add food coloring to each bowl until you have red, orange (red & yellow combined), yellow, green (blue & yellow), blue, and purple (red & blue).
  4. Warm up a tiny bit of coconut oil in a pan, just enough to give it a thin non-stick coating.
  5. Place the batter into the skillet or griddle one color at a time. You may have to do a couple batches to get all 6 pancakes cooked. I used two large skillets simultaneously with 3 colors in each pan.
  6. Cook the pancakes on a medium setting. Flip the pancakes when the edges are noticeably formed. After flipping continue cooking until thoroughly cooked.
  7. Remove pancakes from pan and top with maple syrup and/or candy sprinkles. Enjoy!

While browsing the frozen treat aisle at Meijer the pint of Yasso Party Animal frozen yogurt was like screaming my name… Kimmy! Kimmy! Get over here and get down and party with me! So I had no choice but to grab a pint, take it home, plop down and give it a whirl!

And if you are a fan of ice-cream bars great news for you~ Yasso has a collection of 16 different flavors of their ice cream bars! I snazzed my bar up a bit with a chocolate shell and rainbow sprinkles. I felt that because the bar was only 100 calories I had a little wiggle room to take it to the next level.

To make a chocolate shell for your froyo bar, simply just melt a bit of chocolate chips in a bowl with a tiny bit of coconut oil. Microwave it in 20-second increments and stir until the chocolate is melted down to a liquid.  Then pour it onto your bar and add sprinkles if your sweet tooth is telling you to do so!

The Yasso ice-cream pints are chock full of protein (24g per pint) but they also do not have that chalky aftertaste that other protein products contain. Yasso keeps that protein discrete but packs it in.  Yasso is also lower in calories vs regular ice-cream. Let’s use Party Animal as an example here: 130 calories in a half cup serving.

You will fall in love with Yasso’s creamy texture. They use only high-quality Greek yogurt. Yasso is a healthier alternative to other ice-creams on the market but you would never even know that it is healthier for you when you are eating it. How cool is that? In the summer I often like to indulge in something cold and refreshing. I can not think of a better way to curb that craving. I feel no guilt eating Yasso and I also feel great about serving it to my daughter. Chloe is 8 years old and loves this product. So there you have it~ kid-friendly too!

I created a sundae with my Party Animal froyo. I topped it a with a sugar-free marshmallow topping, added a bit of candy-coated chocolate, some fun little-frosted animal crackers, and a maraschino cherry on top. My daughter said this sundae was the best she ever had and she really enjoyed it with the fun toppings!

My family loves this line of frozen yogurt products and we are really looking forward to trying out all of the other flavors available. I feel that the only drawback to this is the sugar content. A half-cup of the Party Animal has 16 grams of sugar. We have been enjoying the Enlightened and Halo Top ice-cream pints and their product will only set you back about 5-6 grams of sugar. So while this frozen yogurt is a wonderful, tasty treat I do not want to overindulge too often due to the sugar content. There is still that major plus side to this product though with the low-calorie content.

Wondering where you can grab a few of these frozen treats?? Never fear the store locator is here!  CLICK HERE to find out where you can stock up! If you can not find them in your area, spread the word by printing out this REQUEST FORM and turn it in to your store manager.

You can discover more about Yasso on their social media channels.

My first impression of TRUWOMEN bars was the mind blowing taste! The first one I reached for just had to be the Daydreaming About Donuts bar because I am donut-crazed and if I can have a healthy option that tastes like junk food but without all the junk ingredients count me in! My favorite thing about the donut bar is hands down that yummy yummy glaze! These really do replicate a delicious donut quite well. I will be daydreaming about this bar from this point forward. This bar would be a great dessert replacement as well.

If glazed donuts are not your jam fear not! TRUWOMEN comes in a few different flavors and make something for everyone. For all of the cookie lovers out there TRUWOMEN has a Oh Oh Cookie Dough bar, which will have you saying, “dough my goodness”!! The Smother Fudger Peanut Butter bar is an indulgent fudge bar stuffed with a creamy peanut butter filling. And last but not least, for anyone craving something fruity go ahead and pucker up to the Zamn Good Zesty Lemon bar.

I am so grateful for the opportunity to sample these bars. TRUWOMEN sent me a sample to review. I do not think anyone would be disappointed with the taste and the quality of these bars. I can tell that this brand put their heart and soul into this product. If you love dessert and you also have a sweet tooth, these bars will be a match made in heaven for you!

Realgood Pizza is really really good! For real!

Hello everyone! Welcome to my blog and thank you so much for visiting. I am pleased to announce my very first product review with you today. Please let me know what you think… thoughts and opinions welcome! You can comment below or contact me privately.

If you are caught up in the low carb craze like myself you might be wondering how you can still enjoy foods that are typically loaded up with carbohydrates. The great news is that nowadays there a ton of healthy alternatives available to those leading a low-carb lifestyle.

I think it is safe to say that everyone LOVES pizza! Pizza is a universal food and so versatile. There are so many way to construct a great, tasty one! I discovered Realgood pizza recently and after flipping over the box and analyzing the nutrition facts I was sold! That big black dot that says, “guilt free” was enough to get me on board. Realgood pizzas are high in protein, low in carbohydrates, and grain-free (gluten-free). If you are on a keto diet I highly suggest giving these a whirl.

35135046_10156411879024420_7431971783630127104_n35151337_10156411879159420_4515871521461239808_n

There are a couple ways to go about making a low carb pizza. There is cauliflower crust and then there is a meat-based crust. I looked over the ingredients and learned that the crust is composed of chicken and Parmesan cheese. The chicken is free of antibiotics and hormones, and since Realgood Foods cares about your health and well-being their pizzas are free of preservatives.

Each large pizza is 7 inches of greatness and has 50 grams of protein and 8 carbs. This size is great for dinner time. There are smaller pizzas available that would be fabulous for a yummy lunch. The smaller pizzas are 5 inches. The large and small pizzas are available in 3 flavors: three cheese, pepperoni, and supreme.

I decided on the supreme pizza because I am a big fan of lots of toppings on my pizza. I baked my Realgood pizza in the oven and the results were wonderful! Realgood suggests leaving the cardboard on the bottom of the pizza and placing it on a baking sheet.

There are some other ways you can heat them up. Realgood recommends taking the pizza out of the oven (removing the cardboard as well) and finishing off in a frying pan for a couple of minutes to crisp up the crust. You can also try them out in an air-fryer (w/o the cardboard) at 350 degrees for 12-14 minutes. I do own an air-fryer and I will be trying out this method in the near future. They also suggest grilling your pizzas (without the cardboard) for 6-8 minutes on medium heat.

I am thrilled to see that Realgood Foods also has breakfast pizzas available and enchiladas! Breakfast pizzas are available in three flavors: pepperoni, sausage, and bacon. There are 4 types of enchiladas available: cheese, beef, chicken, and pork.

I tested out the sausage breakfast pizza this morning and I am feeling pretty good about it! This is the kind of fuel I need to get me through the day. The breakfast pizza that I had is made of scrambled eggs, mozzarella cheese, a cheese sauce, and Italian sausage. Like the lunch/dinner pizzas the crust is also made up of chicken and Parmesan cheese to keep the carbs low. I included a photo of the nutrition facts below and the breakfast pizza is only 4g carbs, 25g of protein, and 280 calories.

I still have yet to try out the Realgood Foods enchiladas. I am pretty positive that my family will enjoy those too. We do love our Mexican food over here!

My final thoughts: I am so glad I gave these a whirl! I have been curious about this brand for quite some time. My family enjoyed the supreme pizza so much we are crossing our fingers that Realgood Foods will release a large, family sized pizza (we shared two 7″ pizzas). When I indulge in a pizza I also love to have some breadsticks available. It would be totally awesome to have those available in the future. I am looking forward to seeing where this brand goes from here. I know they are increasing in popularity and the possibilities are endless on what future products they will carry in their line of foods.

So where can you find Realgood foods?

  • You can order them online and have them shipped to your home
  • Kroger stores
  • Walmart stores
  • various health food stores

Since I am always looking out for an awesome deal I found an Ibotta deal on Realgood Foods. You can redeem this up to 10x per receipt and get a rebate of $2 for each item!

Deal scenarios at Kroger:

  • Pizzas on sale for $5.99 (reg 6.99) and use the Ibotta rebate to get $2 cashback so the total would be 3.99
  • Enchiladas on sale for $3.99 (reg 4.99) and use the Ibotta rebate to get $2 cashback and your out of pocket cost is $1.99 for each enchilada
