The holidays have come and gone but it is never too late to share a great recipe with my readers. Truth be told, cranberries are one of my absolute favorite dishes when it comes to Thanksgiving and Christmas. I will not do the canned cranberry sauce… I gotta have my fresh! This paleo cranberry sauce is damn delicious and it might just turn a cranberry sauce hater into a lover!
My favorite memory of this paleo cranberry sauce
What? A favorite memory about cranberry sauce? YUP! I brought this cranberry sauce to my mother-in-law’s last year for a side dish for our Christmas dinner. My brother-in-law, Chris, had some of this on his plate. Afterwards he told me that he did not even like cranberry sauce but he told me that he thought that mine was delicious. It is always so wonderful to know that my recipes are well-received and hearing this about my paleo cranberry sauce surely put a smile upon my face!
Set it and forget it in the slow-cooker
Don’t you just love recipes where the work is at a bare minimum? Did you say yes? I sure do and this slow-cooker recipe for my paleo cranberry sauce is just that. I use my trusty slow-cooker to do most of the work with this recipe. This recipe is pure simplicity. Really the only work that needs to be done here is the zesting and the squeezing of the orange. All of the other ingredients in this recipe are dumped into the slow-cooker, you turn the timer on, and bam(!!!), the work is done!
If you are in a hurry you can set your slow-cooker to high for 4 hours. The recipe that I have here cooks the cranberries on low for 6 hours but if you are in a hurry the high setting works just fine as well.
What makes this cranberry sauce paleo
This is a delightful dish to go with your holiday feast and the great part about this recipe is that it does not contain any refined sugars! Cranberries are very tart and require a big dose of sugar to make them pleasing. This paleo cranberry sauce is sweetened completely with only pure maple syrup! Feel free to choose the maple syrup of your liking but you are going to want to make sure it is one of decent quality! You are not going to want to be skimpy with the maple syrup because this is what will make your paleo cranberry sauce sweet.
Coconut sugar to add sweetness
If you would like to have your cranberry more on the sweet side and make it less tart, you can always add a bit more of the maple syrup during the cooking process. Another thing that you can add to this paleo cranberry sauce is a bit of coconut sugar. Coconut sugar is a better alternative than regular table sugar due to its lower glycemic index. Coconut sugar is derived from the sap of the flower of the coconut palm. It is then dried out until all of the water is evaporated.
Gotta have my apples!
I love to have diced apples in my paleo cranberry sauce. The apples will give your sauce a pleasant flavor and a nice added texture. I love to go with Honeycrisp apples here. You can choose any red apple that your heart desires though. I have found that organic Fuji and Gala apples are also wonderful to use if you want to keep the cost down a bit. The Honeycrisp apples tend to cost more but they are truly the best to use with this paleo cranberry sauce.
Time to get nutty
This paleo cranberry sauce also has some added nuts for awesome flavor and a unique texture. I choose to use pecan pieces in my sauce but I have found that chopped walnuts go well with it as well. It is up to you with what you want to go with here! If you would like you can use a mixture and combination of both. I have also used 1/2 a cup of pecans and 1/2 a cup of chopped walnuts in my paleo cranberry sauce.
The spices that your paleo cranberry sauce needs
The right spices are totally and completely essential for your paleo cranberry sauce. In this paleo cranberry sauce recipe, I chose to use a combination of cinnamon, ground cloves, cardamom, and a dash of some allspice. These spices come together harmoniously to result in the most delicious cranberry sauce you have ever tasted! These spices, to me, are the flavors of fall and the taste of a nice holiday dish. I am totally obsessed with these flavors in the cooler months.
I hope that you fall head over heels in love with this paleo cranberry sauce recipe. This recipe is one that I am very fond of and take pride in. The quality of this cranberry sauce will have you kicking canned cranberry sauce to the curb. Your family will appreciate this paleo cranberry sauce at your next Thanksgiving Day feast or at your holiday meal during the month of December. You will appreciate this recipe as well for the ease of it and how simple it is to make a truly wonderful dish with the most minimum amount of time and effort put into it.
I am hoping to share another cranberry recipe over here on the Give It A Whirl Girl blog soon. I created a paleo cranberry cheesecake with my cranberry sauce just recently and boy was it ever tasty! The cheesecake is also vegan so there is no dairy or animal products whatsoever in my cheesecake recipe. It is a guilt-free cheesecake and I am hoping that my readers will enjoy that recipe as well.
