My oh my! There are so many different wing sauces to choose from at Detroit Wing Company. This wing place offers up 17 different sauces ranging from mild to super spicy and everything in between. You can choose from either Classic Wings or Boneless Wings. My little family of 3 stopped in for a late lunch and we went with the 24-piece Classic Wings and we were able to choose 4 different flavors.

The Detroit Wing Company has some incredible wings but there is a lot more to their menu, so let’s explore it a bit!

They have chicken tenders on the menu, along with their DWC mac & cheese, fries with your choice of wing sauce, and they also have poutine! The poutine gravy is actually cooked for a whole 24 hours before serving so that you can have that amazing gravy flavor.

Detroit Wing Company Flavors

Here is the part of the menu that gets super fun to order from. Here is where you decide which of these 17 wing sauces will be going on your order of wings at Detroit Wing Company. They have so many interesting sauces to choose from, it is almost difficult to narrow it down here! They all sound excellent.

For those of you who like it on the mild side there are wing sauces like Butter Cheese, Lemon Pepper, Garlic Parmesan, Honey BBQ, and more. For the spicy thrillseekers at Detroit Wing Company you can go with the Calypso Heat (which is their hottest wing sauce!), Sweet Heat, Hot Garlic, and Habanero Ranch.

Happy Hour at Detroit Wing Company

If you love to chow down on boneless wings make sure you swing by DWC between the hours of 3-5pm. You can score yourself some boneless wings at 40% off. This is a great deal that is just too good to pass up!

What my family ordered

We went with a 24-piece order of wings and were able to choose from 4 different sauces for that size order. We went with Garlic Parmesan, Asian Orange, Butter Cheese, and Carolina Gold BBQ. It was hard to narrow our choices down to only 4 since they all sounded so excellent! I think we definitely made the right choices here though!

The Garlic Parmesan wings were hands-down my favorite of the four flavors that we gave a whirl! The Garlic Parmesan wings have a white creamy sauce and have a VERY potent flavor of garlic and also some Parmesan cheese. I was having a foodgasm at the table with that particular flavor and I swear to you, no doubt I looked like a dirty pig tearing into these wings. This flavor was SUPER sloppy but I do say that in the nicest way. The next time I stop in at the Detroit Wing Company my family will definitely be ordering that flavor once again.

Butter Cheese was quite the interesting wing flavor! I will say that I have never in my life had a wing quite like that. The Butter Cheese is a very mild wing and it will remind you of garlic crust from a cheesy pizza! Though similar to ingredients to the Garlic Parmesan (garlic and Parmesan), the Butter Cheese is more of a fraternal twin.

Asian Orange was a delightful flavor that we also enjoyed. This Asian flavored wing has a very strong taste of orange to it. My daughter, Chloe who is 9, was not a fan of this particular flavor. She did say that the orange flavor was a bit overpowering. No worries though, my husband and I did find this flavor appealing and would happily order this flavor again.

The Carolina Gold BBQ flavor at Detroit Wing Company is a great choice if you enjoy BBQ wings with a not too sweet and not too spicy flavor. This flavor is smack dab right in the middle of the flavor board.

You might not have ever heard about Seeburger’s Cheeseburgers and I hate to break it to you but you have been missing out big time! These addictive little burgers are pure bliss to chow down on, and will have you keep coming back for more! I think of Seeburger’s as a bit of a hidden gem. It is tucked away on Gratiot and nestled next to a party store and only a couple of buildings away from White Castle, another slider destination. Bold move huh to have a slider shop in such close proximity to another slider spot, but it works! Todd Seeburger is the owner and he has his faithful following of slider connoisseurs. My dad and I stopped into Seeburger’s Cheeseburgers on Gratiot for lunch. When you step into this location you can feel a good vibe as soon as you walk through the door. This location has car and cruising memorabilia on display. Gratiot is a cruising destination of many during the warmer summer months in Michigan. Cruising has been happening on Gratiot for decades and my dad is one of the original cruisers from way back in the day.

This Give It A Whirl Girl blog is all about trying new things and giving them a whirl. Since I have tried their cheeseburger sliders a hundred dozen times, today I will be sharing my experience with the Big Clem Burger and the Phat Gratiot Burger. My dad and I stopped in for lunch and today I am sharing my experience of that satisfying and deeply filling lunch.

The Big Clem

The Big Clem burger features two hamburger patties with American cheese, lettuce, Thousand Island dressing, and then this juicy burger is topped off with an onion ring the size of a donut!

I enjoyed this Big Clem Burger big time, guys!! I have never in my life had a burger quite like this. That gigantic onion ring that topped off my burger really hit the spot! The thousand island dressing on this cheeseburger really gave off a Big Mac vibe, only better. I am not a patron of McDonald’s… like ever! This Big Clem Burger puts the Big Mac to shame. At Seeburger’s Cheeseburgers, you get fresh beef, never frozen on your burger. You really can tell the difference. The owner, Todd Seeburger, has a lot of pride about his burgers and he uses only the best ingredients to keep his customers and loyal following happy.

The Phat Gratiot Burger

The Phat Gratiot Burger at Seeburger’s is a double stacked hamburger with pepperjack cheese, BBQ sauce, bacon, and frizzy onions.

This right here is the burger that my dad tried out. My father was ooo’ing and ahh’ing the entire time he ate this burger and he really tried to take his time so he could savor each and every bite of it. This burger earned a spot on my to-do list. l have never had a burger with bbq sauce on it before but I think the combo of bbq sauce and pepper jack cheese might just be a match made in heaven.

There are plenty of other items available at Seeburger’s Cheeseburgers and the daily specials change daily. Seeburger’s serves up plenty of deep-fried goodies and offers a variety of different soups to go with your meal.

There are plenty of sides that you can order at Seeburger’s. I have tried their basket of seasoned fries plenty of times and I can attest to the fact that their fries are outrageously great! The onion rings here are the biggest I have ever seen in my life. I also highly recommend the deep-fried mushrooms here if you are a mushroom-lover like me! Mmm mmm good! Pickle chips and mozzarella cheese sticks are also a great choice.

You don’t have to shy away from Seeburger’s if you are watching what you eat. There are some lower-carb salad options on the menu. There are five different salads offered.

I will admit that I do check the Groupon site often for good deals. If I see a good deal that is just way too good to pass up, then you better believe it, I will grab that Groupon! Yesterday I managed to have quite a frugal day with 3 Groupons. I had a fun-filled day with some good sweets and treats, and a dinner to go along with it! Groupons geared towards dining are always a great way to experience something new and give it a whirl! These Groupons allow you to enjoy food and drink at a deeply discounted price.

This Groupon post is going to cover restaurants that are in the Southeast area of Michigan. I will share with you how you can score some great deals at these Michigan establishments. I am sharing how I Groupon’ed like a boss and had an incredibly delicious FRUGAL day!

How Groupon Works

Groupon is very easy to use. For the purpose of this post, I will only be sharing how to use the dining Groupons. There are many other types of Groupons available though! You simply head on over to the Groupon site or download the app. Choose the LOCAL tab at the top and find the Food & Drink category. Click onto that food & drink category and see what local Groupon deals are happening in your area.

How to get your Groupon

We just recently used a Buoy 12 Groupon this past weekend so I will use that as an example here. Buoy 12 is located in my area of St. Clair Shores, MI. They have two different offers available. One of those offers is for 2 people to receive a $25 voucher (currently sold out but keep checking back) or you can purchase a $50 voucher for four people at the discounted price of $30. So for $30 you get $50 worth of food on your next visit to Buoy 12. That is a discounted price of 40% off.

How to redeem your Groupon for dining

There are two ways you can present your Groupon when you are ready to redeem it. You can either print out the voucher on your printer at home OR you can download the Groupon app and show the server the Groupon on your mobile device.

Our first Groupon we spent was at Starbucks

I got quite lucky with the Starbucks Groupon. The Starbucks Groupons are only by invite-only. I spent $5 for the Groupon and ended up with $10 to spend at Starbucks.

Here is what I purchased at Starbucks: 1 S’mores Frappucino and 1 Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappucino.

I paid only $1.13 for two Frappucinos out-of-pocket. The Groupon was $5. So the total cost was $6.13. Not too shabby for two rather expensive frozen drinks! Starbucks is always just a fancy splurge item for me, so I appreciated that Groupon offer!

Second Groupon we used was at Sagano Japanese Steakhouse

Sagano Japanese Steakhouse currently has two different locations on Groupon: the Warren Japanese Steakhouse and the Clarkston Japanese Steakhouse location. We visited the Warren location so I will be reviewing that experience here.

Read the fine print

Please always read the fine print on Groupons! Sagano Japanese Steakhouse is a shining example of that! For example, you can not use a Groupon at Sagano within 24 hours of purchasing the Groupon. Also, there are menu restrictions on what exactly the Groupon can be used for. We found out the hard way these two things!

What we ordered at Sagano

At Sagano Japanese Steakhouse my husband and I ordered a cucumber sushi roll (please not that you can’t use the Groupon for sushi rolls here. We paid separate for the sushi), and we ordered the chicken teriyaki entree and the beef teriyaki entree. My husband, my daughter Chloe who is 9, and I shared the 2 entrees and that was plenty for the 3 of us. Our entrees came with a soup and a salad, which was wonderful and delicious! We were very pleased with our teriyaki dishes. They had had a great flavor and the portion size was perfect!

How we got the most out of our Sagano Groupon

We had the $30 Groupon for Sagano. The beef teriyaki was $16.95 and the chicken teriyaki entree was $12.95. Our $30 Sagano Groupon covered the cost of the two teriyaki entrees. Our cucumber sushi roll was $3.50 and then we had to leave a tip. I gave the waitress a great tip because she was absolutely awesome, I must say! We really felt that the service at Sagano was excellent.

The Sagano Groupon is PERFECT for HIBACHI!

The Sagano Japanese Steakhouse Groupon is perfect for giving the hibachi grill a whirl. This image below is of my scallop hibachi dish that I got on a previous visit to Sagano. My family of 3 were quite impressed with our hibachi dinners. When we dined at the hibachi grill on that visit we had a fantastic chef. He had a great sense of humor and was very entertaining. Of course there were big flames and an onion volcano and my daughter really enjoyed the theatrics of the Japanese chef that cooked our meals.

And finally, for dessert, we used a Menchie’s Groupon

We are big fans of Menchie’s here in the Give It A Whirl Girl household so we could not pass this deal up! The Menchie’s Groupon is valid for two different locations: Warren and Shelby Township. The Menchie’s Groupon allows frozen yogurt enthusiasts (like me!) to purchase bundles of $5 Menchie’s vouchers for a discounted price.

What is Eastern Market

If you are not sure what Eastern Market is, it is a very large farmer’s market venue that also has some other vendors there selling miscellaneous things. Eastern Market is nestled in the heart of the city of Detroit and it is a must-see place to visit if you are near the city. Each weekend in the warmer spring and summer months, Eastern Market is open for shopping. It is quite the busy, bustling place and it is advised to arrive early to have the best pick of everything. You can find many different types of homemade baked goods in the Eastern Market sheds. I bought two gigantic M&M and chocolate chip cookies!

And no Eastern Market visit is complete unless you visit DeVries & Company 1887!

DeVries & Company 1887 is a store that is a pure joy to visit when you are in the area of Eastern Market. This place is a go-to place for many cheese connoisseurs. This store is filled with some really interesting foods that you will not find on the shelf of your local grocery store. I ended up taking home some squid ink pasta, licorice candy, and some sour Michi-Gummies!

My husband and I were looking for a place to go for our date-night and since it was the day before Cinco de Mayo we were craving a big plate of Mexican food. We have driven past the Crazy Gringo restaurant many times before but never stopped in. The Crazy Gringo Mexican Cantina is located in the 15 Mile Road and Gratiot area of Clinton Township so it was not far from where we live in St. Clair Shores.

Mexicantown in Detroit is usually our go-to place for that authentic taste and experience but my hubby did not feel like driving down to the city last night. So that is how we ended up here. Also, I almost always Google a restaurant before my first time going and I was impressed with the big plates of colorful food. This was the perfect Mexican restaurant to celebrate the Cinco de Mayo holiday!

My First impression of Crazy Gringo Mexican Cantina

My first impression of the Crazy Gringo was how colorful and how fun the atmosphere is. The Crazy Gringo is not a restaurant for peace and quiet. It seems as though everyone was enjoying the atmosphere and just kicking back and having a great time. The first thing that catches your eye here is the bar that is all lit up with little colorful lights. When you see something like this, you know that you are in for a great time! The bar here looked very inviting and my craving for a blue margarita kicked into high gear!

The Crazy Gringo Mexican Cantina restaurant has a great big menu that offers something for everyone. The portion sizes here are quite generous! You will not leave this Mexican restaurant hungry, that is for certain! Our dinners included a cup of Chicken Tortilla Soup and some chips and salsa. We love chowing down on those chips and salsa before our big platter of food arrives.

The entrees here at the Crazy Gringo Mexican Cantina also include a good helping of some beans and rice.

If you have any room in your tummy after your big Mexican feast here, there are also some traditional Mexican desserts available. I did not get a chance to give these a whirl, maybe next time? I have no doubt that the flan and the churros are on-point! That deep fried ice cream sure sounds interesting too!

What we ordered at the Crazy Gringo Mexican Cantina

First things first! Can’t go to a Mexican cantina without a margarita or a Corona with a lime sticking out of the top of it! I have not had a drop of any alcohol since September of 2018 for some medical reasons. I had a hard time saying no to a margarita here at the Crazy Gringo. A blue margarita with some salt on the rim and lime is tops for me! That has always been one of my favorite alcoholic beverages. I was pretty impressed with the smaller $7 margarita that I ordered.

My Electric Kiwi Margarita was made with tequila, blue curacao, blue island pucker, lime juice, and some sour mix. I did request an extra lime with my drink, though, and they did not give me one. Oh well, no biggie!

I ordered the Crazy Wet Burrito for myself because I love big fat, wet, smothered burritos! My husband is more of a fajita lover so he went with the chicken fajita dinner.

Their drink menu boasts that they have over 50 varieties of tequila available. Their House Margarita comes in a regular size for $7 and a boomba size for $10. If you want a top-shelf margarita (who doesn’t??) Those are $12 for the smaller size and $16 for the larger boomba size.

Crazy Gringo Mexican Cantina also offers other specialty cocktails for your drinking pleasure! The Tequila Sunrise and the Mexican Sunset sound fabulous!

If you are thirsty for a shot, they also have them on their drink menu. The shots are $6.50 each. Here is a great one:

Crazy Gringo Mexican Cantina can also liquor you up for new frozen special cocktails and also their famous Corona Rita!

I included a photo of my Electric Kiwi Margarita alongside their chicken tortilla soup. The soup was the perfect prelude to our Mexican meal that was cooking up in the kitchen.

Our Mexican dinner also came with a generously sized basket of chips and 3 different salsas to dip the chips in.

Here is the Crazy Wet Burrito on the menu. For $11.99 you get a gigantic platter of food. The burrito weighs a ton! Both meals included Mexican rice and beans.

For the chicken fajita meal that my husband ordered it came out with one hot plate for the chicken and vegetables and it also included a big side plate for all of the traditional fajita fixings!

I know the plate here is not pretty but I wanted to show off how much I conquered of this Crazy Wet Burrito! I came close to finishing it off and cleaning off my plate, but not quite!

Final Thoughts

Overall, my husband and I were very impressed with our meals at the Crazy Gringo Mexican Cantina in Clinton Township. This is a Mexican restaurant that we can see ourselves dining at again in the near future. The meals were a tremendously great value for the price and considering just how much food we received on our plates. I hope that this Crazy Gringo Mexican Cantina review will inspire you to stop in and give it a great big whirl!

My Extreme Pizza Review

This was not our first time at this Grosse Pointe pizza place. We have been here several times before. We live one city over in St. Clair Shores and the little extra drive is worth it to get to this unique Grosse Pointe pizza establishment. I consider this place to be a hidden gem and I am so happy I discovered it a few years back. This Grosse Pointe pizza place has a menu that builds up excitement in me. There are so many excellent choices here and I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them! Extreme Pizza is known to consistently serve up pizzas that do not disappoint!

Extreme Pizza Menu

Extreme Pizza has quite the exciting menu board! Their menu features 16 Carnivore signature pizzas and 10 Veggin Out pizzas. Their menu has something for everyone and also includes pizzas for the adventurous eater. While you are able to create your very own build-your-own pizza here, I highly recommend giving their signature pizzas a whirl. At our most recent visit, we ordered my favorite, The Boar’der (my pick) and my husband chose the Yard Sale.

The Boar’der: Shredded pork marinated in a sweet BBQ sauce, red onions, fresh cilantro, cheddar and mozzarella.

Extreme Pizza is an excellent choice for your next “cheat day” meal! YOLO so you might as well just stuff your face with some Extreme Pizza… am I right?? I absolutely love places like this that offer the customer to enjoy a unique experience. If I ever want an ordinary pizza I will head on over to Little Caesar’s for a Hot & Ready pizza.

On days when I am craving something a lot more adventurous on my pizza, Extreme Pizza in Grosse Pointe is my go-to place.

How you can get your very own made-to-order donut at Daddy’s Doughnuts

When you walk into Daddy’s Doughnuts there are menu cards available at the door. This is where the magic happens! You get to be the creator of your made-to-order doughnut. There are options at the top of the card for 12 doughnuts available in a variety of signature flavors or you have the option to design your own with a very wide variety of different toppings and drizzles.

The steps for designing your made-to-order Daddy’s Doughnut is simple! First off, you start with a warm vanilla doughnut then:

Choose your doughnut coating.
Choose your doughnut drizzle.
Choose your doughnut topping.

One drawback

For me, there was only one little drawback that came to mind while typing up this Daddy’s Doughnuts review. That is that there is no seating available inside this donut shop. I know that many donut shops are grab-and-go but this is the type of establishment that I actually wouldn’t mind hanging out in for a while with my family. I wouldn’t mind having them pour me a cup of coffee to go with my donuts. I am only pointing this out so that my readers are aware that you will have to take your donuts to-go.

What’s next for me at Daddy’s Doughnuts

I am most certainly going to be stopping in again at this establishment for some more donuts and smiles! I have never in my life had a donut with bacon on it and I will be ordering a maple/bacon donut, for sure, next time I come in! The Key Lime Pie donut also sounds like a winner for me! I am also intrigued by their Strawberry Shortcake donut. This is the place to be if you are bored with your regular glazed donuts. Stop in at Daddy’s Doughnuts if you want to try out some adventurous, new donut flavors!

My 38th birthday on February 23rd may have come and gone but the wonderful memories will remain of my awesome birthday dinner with family at Terry’s Terrace in Harrison Township, Michigan. I have dined at Terry’s Terrace a couple of times in the past and I was so impressed with my experience I had to go back. If you are looking for a seafood dish of excellence then Terry’s Terrace is the restaurant that you will want to dive into! This Terry’s Terrace review will go into detail about my seafood birthday dinner at this establishment. Unfortunately, I can’t have alcohol at this point in time of my life so I am unable to discuss that but it does appear to be that this place has an incredible bar. My Terry’s Terrace Review

The atmosphere

Terry’s Terrace has a great ambiance. The atmosphere at this Harrison Township is a fun one. This restaurant is often very busy and I do suggest making reservations if you do not want to wait around for a table because they do fill up fast. This restaurant is dimly lit and depending on where you sit there can be some background noise. The area around the bar is where most of the noise comes from but there are other areas of the restaurant you can be seated at that are more on the quiet side.

Arcade

For those of you who have quarters in your pocket there is also an arcade at the back of this restaurant. Inside you will find some great video games and a wide variety of pinball machines.

Lobster Lover’s February

Part of the reason why I chose Terry’s Terrace this year was due to their Lobster Lover’s February event that takes place all month. During the month of February Terry’s Terrace has several different lobster offerings to choose from.

I don’t know about you but I sure can’t pass up the opportunity to have a lobster feast. When I looked at the menu at Terry’s Terrace I felt like I hit the jackpot. They have so many incredible and tempting seafood dishes to choose from! It almost seemed like an impossible task to just settle on one because I am sure they are all magnificent. So if you are a seafood lover like me, you are going to swoon over the menu here at Terry’s Terrace.

Start out with an appetizer at Terry’s Terrace

Appetizers were currently half off when we dined there on a Saturday around 4 pm. It is difficult to pass up a good appetizer at a great price so my mom ordered two plates of the crab-stuffed mushrooms. Boy were they ever awesome! The crab-stuffed mushrooms are one of the house specialties at Terry’s Terrace and for good reason… excellent appetizer! The crab-stuffed mushrooms appetizer consists of mushroom caps stuffed with real crab mix, red onions, and finished with Monterey jack cheese and a lemon to squeeze on top.

Load up on some soup and salad

My dinner included a house salad and I got that with a cup of French dressing on the side. Pretty decent salad but what I was really excited to give a whirl was Terry’s Terrace lobster bisque soup. I have a weakness for lobster bisque and whenever I see it on a menu I just have to order it. My only beef with the soup was that I wish there had just been a tab bit more in the bowl. The lobster bisque had the perfect amount of lobster meat on top of it to swirl into the soup and delight my palate. It was also served with a small piece of garlic bread on the side to dip into it. I am going to be dreaming of this soup for days. I would love another helping of this on my next visit. And the great thing about the lobster bisque is that it is a regular menu item and not just for Lobster Lover’s February.

Though I have not tried it yet and can’t speak from experience (yet), Terry’s Terrace has a clam chowder on their menu. They are known for their seafood and I’m quite certain that their clam chowder will not disappoint. I am thinking that on my next visit to Terry’s Terrace I will be trying that one out! The clam chowder is highlighted on their menu as one of their specialties so of course, you know it is going to be fabulous!

My seafood dinner, the star of the show

Because Terry’s Terrace has Lobster Lover’s February taking place this month I just had to go with a lobster dish and their lobster ravioli turned out to be such a fantastic choice. I have ordered lobster ravioli and other restaurants and have sometimes been let down because the lobster has sort of a pungent, strong taste. Terry’s Terrace lobster ravioli was everything but that. The lobster ravioli had a delicate taste and they were served with a lush white creamy champagne sauce. The lobster ravioli also included a blend of red peppers, corn, and shallots.

Another one of the lobster menu items for Lobster Lover’s February was the lobster-stuffed cod and my mother ordered that. The lobster-stuffed cod was one of the lobster menu items that I debated on ordering. I do love eating a big hunk of some meaty cod. I am including a photo of my mom’s meal here so you can see just how good this was! The cod fish was baked to perfection and topped with a great amount of lobster meat. I was a little jelly of her dinner even though I loved mine. Maybe next year for Lobster Lover’s February I will order the dish that she got.

Terry’s Terrace for kids

Terry’s Terrace also has a kids menu available. This is a great place to take your kids on Tuesdays because on Tuesdays guess what? Kids eat FREE! I am going to suggest the fish & chips for your kiddos because Terry’s Terrace has award-winning fish & chips.

Great place to celebrate a birthday

Terry’s Terrace might just be the next place you want to celebrate your

next big moment in life or a birthday party with family and friends. I made a reservation, of course, because there were 15 of us. They had us seated in a separate little area of the restaurant where it was just us and we were isolated from the rest of the restaurant. It was perfect to have a room like this set aside for my large party of dinner guests.

Terry’s Terrace also provided me with a dessert on the house (no picture). It was a brownie served with vanilla ice-cream, and a big dollop of whipped cream.

Be sure to sign up for their VIP Club for some freebies and deals. They sent me a postcard before my birthday to use on my birthday dinner. I believe it was $7 off my birthday dinner (feel free to correct me if I am wrong). Unfortunately, I ended up either misplacing mine card or accidentally throwing it in the recycling bin.

Final thoughts on my Terry’s Terrace experience

My family and I had an excellent meal at this restaurant from start-to-finish! I honestly can not think of a single gripe that I had for my birthday dinner here. I believe that my family also enjoyed their experience here. The menu for Lobster Lover’s February is both impressive and delicious. I am definitely going to be going back to Terry’s Terrace next year for their lobster feast. I hope that this Terry’s Terrace review will inspire you to stop in and give it a whirl!

ROCKET FIZZ REVIEW (Soda Pop, candy, nostalgia, gifts)

I actually just found out about this incredible place, Rocket Fizz, a few days ago through my sister. My sister took her kiddos here and shared some photos from her experience. I knew that right after seeing those photos of hers that I needed to come in and scope out this fun and unique place. Rocket Fizz is a soda pop & candy shop, as well a nostalgia store located in Shelby Township, MI. These are actually a chain of stores that are located throughout the United States. Spectacular surprises await you around every corner and I am sharing my first-time experience with you in this Rocket Fizz review. From floor-to-ceiling there are sweet confections and oddities everywhere your eyes look. It is like sensory overload in here and I mean that in the greatest way for the candy consumer.

Just what is Rocket Fizz?

Rocket Fizz just might be the place to head over to when you have a major hankering for sweets and you need to satisfy that sweet tooth of yours. This is the place to visit if you need to stock up on “Cheat Day” sweets and treats.

If you have ever been curious about what mustard-flavored or puke flavored pop tasted like then Rocket Fizz has you covered with their completely and totally INSANE flavors of pop for the thrillseeker!

Rocket Fizz is a store that has great pride in offering unique food and drink items to the public. They are a brand that strives for creativity and innovation. This store is the furthest thing from being boring. Rocket Fizz is the type of store that definitely evokes a lot of happiness, a ton of smiles, and plenty of hardy laughs. The mission of the Rocket Fizz chain of stores is that they want to offer something for everyone, for people of all ages and backgrounds. After my first visit here I can truthfully say that Rocket Fizz does succeed in doing that quite well! We had a blast here and we are all excited to come back soon for another visit.

I ended up taking home a big bag of candy that was chock full of several (and I do mean several) different flavors of taffy. We opted for the larger size bag that you could fill up with as much candy as you could stuff in there. It was $9 for the large bag and I believe it was $7 for the all-you-could-fill smaller bulk candy bag. There were so many different unique flavors of soda-pop at Rocket Fizz and I need to go back when I have a bigger chunk of money to spend here. I also am not a pop-drinker AT ALL but the unique flavors here are worthy of a try. My daughter ended up getting a black licorice pop and boy was it ever tasty! You can choose 4 flavors of soda-pop and build your own 4-pack at Rocket Fizz for $8.00. That is a great deal at $2 a pop! Otherwise, the soda pops sell for $2.29 a piece. The next time I visit this place I am going to get adventurous and try out the weird flavors of soda pop. I am thinking that it would be fun to purchase a couple of different 4-packs and do a video review with my 9-year-old daughter, Chloe Pearl! She is my little blogger sidekick and she has an adventurous palate when it comes to food and drink. Just like her momma, she will try pretty much anything once!

As you can see in the photo below, we did take home quite a bit of taffy in many different assorted flavors. I wonder how long this bowl of candy will last here? Probably not long!

Modern Cone REVIEW – Our First Visit To This Modern-Day Ice-Cream Shop In St. Clair Shores

Modern Cone is a fairly new ice-cream shop to hit the city of St. Clair Shores, MI. This ice cream shop is formerly known as Ashby’s Ice Cream shop. I am so excited about the change that has come to this location. This past weekend we were actually looking for a new frozen-yogurt or ice cream shop to visit and we stumbled upon Modern Cone on Yelp. The photos that I saw on my Yelp app totally and completely sucked me in. So for Tried It Out Tuesday this week I am sharing my Modern Cone review with you. If you are in the Detroit area (or St. Clair Shores would be even better) you need to check out Modern Cone. Their extensive menu is super duper exciting for the ice cream enthusiast. You will find yourself coming back for more and more after your first visit! I am always looking for new and interesting foods to try out and Modern Cone was the most perfect content to share with my readers.

My Modern Cone Ice Cream Review

First Impressions

My first impression of this ice cream shop was the super duper friendly staff! There were two people working when I came in and they were both very friendly and both were helpful. It is always reassuring to go into a new establishment and be welcomed by some joyful staff members.

Modern Cone is a decently-sized little ice cream shop. There are several ice cream flavors to choose from, an exciting menu board, and also an adequate amount of seating for those who wish to enjoy their ice cream on the spot. Check out the menu board below.

Create Your Own Stacker

Modern Cone offers up one of these lovely items known as a Stacker. You can order a Stacker off the menu board or create your very own!

Easy peasy and endless possibilities! I look forward to trying more Stackers off their menu and then venturing into creating my own.

Regular size Stackers sell for $6.00 and the large size sells for $8.00. To me, this is a very reasonable price for a sundae that is not only delicious but memorable too!

I ended up splurging on the Cereal Killer sundae, my hubby got a I Want S’more (s’mores flavor), and my daughter Chloe got a double-scoop ice cream cone with rainbow sherbet and cotton candy. It was really hard to narrow down my choice to just one because the Stackers that Modern Cone offers all sound enticing to me. I consider myself an ice cream enthusiast so I can’t wait to return to Modern Cone and give more of these creative icec ream concoctions a whirl!

Cereal Killer

I have never in my life had an ice cream sundae with cereal on it but now seems like a good time to start! My Cereal Killer Stacker included strawberry ice cream with a variety of different breakfast cereals (Fruity Pebbles, Trix, and Lucky Charms) and it was then topped with a white chocolate sauce. Talk about a unique ice cream experience! Yeah yeah yeah I know this sounds like diabetes that is ready to happen in a cup BUT I do not treat myself to confections like this often so all is good! I was long overdue for a Cheat Day treat and this Cereal Killer Stacker satisified my sweet tooth!

They also have “NACHOS”!

I was really intrigued by the section of the menu where it said NACHOS! This ice cream shop puts a delicious spin on nachos and they came up with dessert nachos. Yep… you heard that right! With the nachos, you get two flavors of ice cream, your choice of 3 different toppings, and two dessert sauces.

Other Items Available On The Menu

There is a great variety of items available on the menu here. Indulge in an Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich or Cookie Ala Mode! Few things in life beat the winning combination of a warm cookie paired with some scrumptious ice cream so I bet you a million bucks that I will be trying out both of these frozen treats!

What is next for me at Modern Cone

I already have my mind made up (I think!) for my next visit to Modern Cone. I need that Fruity Explosion! The Fruity Explosion comes with vanilla ice cream but I am leaning towards swapping that out for some Blue Moon or cotton-candy!

Final Thoughts

I am sharing this Modern Cone review today because I want to inspire you all to get off your butt and head on over here! This was my first ever visit here and I was absolutely blown away by the menu choices.

Ice cream shops like this are a dream come true for me because I am not into ordinary… give me extraordinary!

This place is anything but boring. When you go to an ice cream shop like this you are in for a real treat. The menu is so creative and it really has inspired me to want to go back for more! I want to give it all a big whirl! Lucky for us, we actually live within walking distance to Modern Cone. I am feeling like I hit the jackpot by discovering this unique and modern place!

Nino Salvaggio & A Passion Fruit Guava Smoothie Bowl RECIPE

Let’s kick things off here by just admitting that I feel so very blessed to live in close proximity to Nino Salvaggio in St. Clair Shores. I have been visiting Nino Salvaggio’s for as long as I can remember. My mom used to go shopping here all the time and my mind was always blown by the beautiful, colorful fruit and vegetable displays there. It is sort of like a work of art… an installation of the prettiest produce your eyes have seen. Nino Salvaggio takes pride in the products that they sell, and it shows! This store is absolutely stunning and you can see that they pay attention to detail.

Today I will also be sharing a recipe for an exotic fruit smoothie bowl that I created with passion fruit and guava. Passion fruit is one of my favorite fruits and I love the sweet and sour taste of it. Guava is another favorite exotic fruit of mine and I don’t get a chance to enjoy it very often. I could not resist buying one from Nino Salvaggio.

About Nino Salvaggio

Nino Salvaggio is the go-to place in the area if you want some perfect and flawless ingredients in your food. It’s not just fruits and veggies though! Nino Salvaggio also has a deli and meat counter. They also have a great little grocery section with some very cool, unusual ingredients. And you just have to see the gorgeous bakery at Nino Salvaggio. I get my chocolate cassata birthday cake from Nino Salvaggio every single year. And speaking of birthdays, mine is next month and I will be enjoying that cake soon! Yippee!

I visited Nino Salvaggio this past weekend to pick up some exotic fruits. I knew ahead of time that I wanted to pick up a couple passion fruits (one of my all-time favorite fruits). The dilemma was that I really was not quite sure what I wanted to combine it with for my smoothie bowl. Then I saw the guava and I knew that would pair well with the passion fruit so I took home one of those.

The exotic fruits section at Nino Salvaggio is the most interesting place to shop, for me anyway! This is the spot in the store where you can get brave and muster up the strength to try something new!

Passion Fruit

So this is the fruit that I was really going after with my trip to Nino Salvaggio. Passion fruit just might be one of my all-time favorite fruits to chow down on. With the passion fruit, you get the wonderful combination of sweet & sour. If you don’t like the texture of tapioca you probably won’t like this. It does, to me, have a tapioca texture. It is slimy and seedy but the taste blows my mind. Using this as the star of my smoothie bowl was a wise choice!

Passion fruit is a nutrient-dense fruit that has a great amount of Vitamin C in it and it is great for the immune system. The passion fruit also has some fiber, Vitamin A, potassium, and a bit of iron. It is a small fruit and contains around 17 calories per serving. Guava

Guava is the second fruit that I ended up going with for my smoothie bowl. These guavas are oh so yummy but they are pricey! I only took home one small guava. One turned out to be just enough for the flavor that I was going after.

As far as nutrition goes with the guava fruit, you are going to find some antioxidants, Vitamin C, fiber, and beta carotene in the fruit. There are 8 wonderful health benefits of the guava fruit and you can feed your brain with knowledge over here.

Rambutan

Now here is an interesting piece of fruit! This is a rambutan and it sort of reminds me of lychee fruit. I was really tempted to get more of these but the steep price deterred me and I only purchased one! Me and my daughter, Chloe, split the rambutan in half and we each tried a small piece. It definitely does have a taste reminiscent of lychee. The flesh was soft and also reminded me of grapes. I would give this a whirl again. We really enjoyed the experience of trying this unique fruit.

Quince

Quince is a new-to-me fruit too. Never ever had one in my life had quince! These tart fruits are grown in Chile and you can eat them raw, but it is advised to cook these if you want the best flavor to come through.

Ya Ya Pear

The ya ya pear is a pear that originates from China. This white pear’s flavor can best be described as a cross between a rose and a pineapple. The ya ya pear is crisp and sweet, but not overly sweet. Just the right amount of sweetness!

Passion Fruit / Guava Smoothie Bowl RECIPE

For this Passion Fruit/ Guava smoothie bowl I used two frozen bananas, two passion fruits, one guava, coconut milk, chia seeds, and coconut flakes. This tropical smoothie bowl makes a fantastic treat for breakfast!

Want a smoothie bowl with exotic flavor?

Give this tropical passion fruit and guava smoothie bowl a whirl!

2 Bananas (Frozen)
1/4 cup Full fat coconut milk
2 Passion Fruit
1 Guava
2 tbsp Coconut flakes
1 tbsp Chia seeds

Place two frozen bananas, 1 passion fruit, 1 guava, and 1/4 cup of coconut milk in the blender. Use your smoothie mode if your blender has one.
Once blended up pour the smoothie mixture into a large bowl. Soup bowls work well.
Top your smoothie bowl with some shredded coconut flake and chia seeds. And now you can use your other passion fruit to top the smoothie.
Eat and enjoy! Hope you love it!

Final thoughts

Sounds strange (maybe??) but I sure do get excited about taking a little trip to my favorite fruit & veggie store- Nino Salvaggio! If you are looking for top-notch produce you will find whatever it is you are looking for at Nino Salvaggio. Definitely make sure you visit the exotic fruit section of the store. What you need to do next is get brave and try some of these unusual fruits and vegetables. My blog is all about trying new things and eating with an open mind. Olga’s REVIEW – A Lunch Date With My Mom At This St. Clair Shores Restaurant

It has been a while since my mother and I have dined out together. My mom is my best friend and I always look forward to our get-togethers. Yesterday she invited me out to lunch at Olga’s in St. Clair Shores, MI. I love Olga’s and haven’t dined there for at least a couple of years so I was very excited and pumped to go there. My mom had located a Groupon for Olga’s and it was a great deal, way too good to pass up! Today I will be reviewing the Olga’s location in St. Clair Shores, MI.

We arrived fairly early on in the day and there were a few tables of people dining. It was not busy and I loved that because I was hangry and starrrrrving! Our waitress was pleasant and prompt. What’s for lunch at Olga’s?

I am still trying to maintain a gluten-free diet and dining out at a restaurant is often challenging. I feel very limited on what I can order. I viewed the menu before coming here and I really liked what I saw for the seasonal offerings. I was planning on ordering the Kale and Roasted Apple Salad with Chicken but when I inquired about the seasonal menu when we got there the waitress informed me that they did not have a seasonal menu. I was a little stumped because it is on Olga’s website. Bummer! Oh well.

For starters

Even though I eat mainly gluten-free sometimes I take a chance and order something that does have gluten in it and that was the case with the Quinoa Harvest Salad that I orderd for an appetizer. I do not believe I have Celiac Disease but gluten often puts a big-time damper on my mood (depression and fatigue) and I also try my best to avoid gluten because I like to stick with a paleo-ish diet. Wondering what was in this dish?

This was a fabulous small plate to kick off my lunch at Olga’s. All of these ingredients combined to make a great appetizer for me. I loved the taste and texture of this. The Olga’s Herb Dressing was a big hit with me! Not sure of what exactly was in the dressing but whatever herbs they used, they nailed it and this really hit the spot!

Olga’s has some great appetizers and small plates on the menu. When I went to Olga’s back in the day I would order the Spinach Pie every single time. Olga sure whips up a tasty spinach pie. The Greek Curly Fries looked appetizing. They probably put Arby’s curly fries to shame. They are served with a garlic-yoghurt sauce, feta, and rosemary.

So instead of ordering a salad from the seasonal, limited time only menu, the Gala Apple Pecan Salad really caught my eye on the menu. It is fall, after all, and I can not think of a better topping on a salad this time of year than apples! The salad sounded pretty exciting to me! It consists of field greens, Gala apple, red onion, feta, cranberries, candied pecans, and a white balsamic to top it with. I ordered mine as a medium and I added some grilled chicken to it. The other meat options include grilled chicken, Atlantic salmon, flat iron steak or Olga’s seasoned beef and lamb (at an additional cost).

bd’s Mongolian Grill is the place to be if you want to build your own stir-fry and be the chef of your own meal. This bd’s Mongolian Gril review covers the basics on what you need to know about dining here. You choose the meat, veggies, sauces, and seasonings. Once your bowl is complete you take it up to the big grill and watch the meal cook right before your eyes. This is a great place to dine with family and friends and your meal will definitely give you something to talk about.

I have a long, long history with bd’s Mongolian Grill. It actually used to be my favorite place to dine at while I was a teenager in the 90’s. I even had my high-school graduation in one of the large dining rooms at one of the original locations in Royal Oak, MI. When I was growing up I was fascinated with this place. Just the thought of having an empty bowl and filling it up with various meats/ seafood, vegetables, sauces, and seasonings was enough to excite the inner chef in myself.

Flash forward to a couple of days ago and it was my first visit in years since the price dramatically increased. We had a coupon for two bowls for $20 and we ordered a kid’s meal for my daughter, Chloe, as well. Coupons always give us a big incentive to go out to eat so I am always scouring our papers for deals.

You can check out the menu online for your bd’s Mongolian Grill location that you choose to visit. The menu is simple and to the point. At this restaurant, you get to be the chef and the creator of your final concoction, or you can view one of the menu cards and use that as a guide.

The possibilities of what your stir-fry will become are endless here at bd’s Mongolian Grill. No two bowls are ever the same!

Meat/Protein

There are several protein choices to choose from up at the serve-yourself bar. They provide everything from beef, chicken, sausage, pork, seafood, and some other options. If you are a vegan, the great news is that you can also come up with a great meal here. Just go ahead and skip the meat area. This area here also has a few noodle options available if you would like pasta in your stir-fry.

This is the area where the bowl really starts to kick into high gear that you are building. There is a large serve-yourself area that has several vegetables and other toppings to choose from. This area also includes some eggs that can be incorporated into your bowl. I always have to have my egg and I get two for the Asian dish that I love to build.

Surround Yourself With Squash & Gourds- Tried It Out Tuesday (Dumpling & Buttercup Squash)

Have you ever gone on a squash adventure? No? Neither have I until this past weekend when I went to Nino Salvaggio International Marketplace in St. Clair Shores, MI looking for something interesting to try this week for Tried It Out Tuesday. We ended up taking home four different types of squash. In this post I will be discussing the dumpling squash and the buttercup squash that we tried.

I have written about this place before and I love going here on a fun little foodie adventure when I have a small wad of cash to blow. Some girls spend their dollars getting hair & nails done or buying trendy new clothes. Not me, not this girl right here! My family enjoys being adventurous eaters so when we have a little extra cash we like to treat ourselves to something delicious and tasty.

There is a whole world of squash out there in the universe just waiting to be discovered by you!

When you eat with an open mind you allow yourself the chance to experience new foods, new flavors. I went to Nino’s with no clear plan. I just wanted to go in there and walk out with something that I have never tried and experienced.

Nino Salvaggio’s is a great local place that is chockful of interesting fruits and vegetables right at your fingertips. They currently have 3 locations with another added location in the works. I live closest to the smaller, St Clair Shores location, and believe it or not I have been going to this little store my whole entire life. On weekends I remember my mom taking us out to fruit markets to stock up on produce. We would go to Randazzo’s on Gratiot in Roseville and we would go to Nino’s in St Clair Shores. Honestly, I absolutely hated going to these stores when I was growing up. I thought it was boring and I would get a bit antsy and impatient and want to leave.

Look at me now! I am all grown up and going shopping for food is always the highlight of my days and I look forward to it. I just can’t seem to get enough of it.

Nino’s is bustling with people on the weekend and for good reason! They have the most beautiful displays of fresh produce that I have ever witnessed. They are super picky about what gets put out on the display for purchase, and they only put out the best of the best.

I will be writing frequently about my shopping experiences there. Other than Eastern Market, this is my go-to place for interesting eats. If you live in the area of Nino Salvaggio’s I highly recommend taking a little trip there to see what you can stock up on. There is always something new and interesting there to feed the senses.

I am a huge fan of summertime in Michigan. I pretty love and cherish most things about summer here, minus the god-awful humidity. I do enjoy a good barbeque feast on the weekends and I do love the food during the summer BUT my favorite foods are all autumn related. I love a good, filling bowl of soup on a cold day. I love a thick & hearty stew. I enjoy eating pumpkin flavored desserts. Just last year I recently discovered that I am also a huge fan of squash. The first squash I fell in love with last year was the butternut squash. I pureed it and made some paleo soup with it and topped it with a coconut milk drizzle. And then next up I ventured into trying out acorn squash. I remember serving it as a side dish with a maple syrup drizzle on it.

So this year I was up for the challenge of taking home some new-to-me squash. Nino Salvaggio’s had a grand display of squash, pumpkins, and gourds out in the front of the store. I grabbed a shopping cart and starting asking Google a bunch of questions on my phone about these squash I was about to purchase. I filled up my cart with four varieties: dumpling squash, buttercup squash, sweet potato squash, and an orange hubbard squash. I had a general idea on what I was going to do with them. Maple syrup always goes well with roasted squash so I got myself a bottle of pure Michigan maple syrup.

I did not even step foot into the store and I already had my mind made up on what I was going to take home… SQUASH and lots of it!

My daughter, Chloe, was scoping out the heirloom pumpkins and observing them in amazement. She fell in love with a tall white pumpkin that you can see in the photo below.

I also had to rummage through the basket of decorative gourds and bring home a few of them. We enjoyed looking at how unique each and every one of them was.

Good Eats At Sugarbush Tavern REVIEW – Eastpointe, MI – And The Best Cherry Chicken Salad Of My Life!

Who doesn’t love a great deal? I discovered Sugarbush Tavern through a local advertisement paper and through a recommendation from my mother. My husband and I often browse those publications to discover new restaurants that are local and have a coupon offer. Sugarbush had a buy-one-get-one-half-off coupon offer so we decided to step in for a family dinner and hope for the best. We love discovering new-to-us restaurants that are local to us. Giving new things a whirl is what I live for. I love the thrill of it all. Today I will be sharing my Sugarbush Tavern restaurant with you all. I can’t wait to tell you about the greatest cherry chicken salad of my life!

We reside in St Clair Shores so heading over to Eastpointe is not too far of a drive for us. Sugarbush Tavern is definitely conveniently located for someone like myself.

Keep reading to find out about our incredible meals here and to find out more about their menu items. They are known to have the best ribs in town, also known to serve up a big fat juicy burger, wings, and other entrees. They also have a weekly specials menu for food and drinks.

About Sugarbush Tavern

We visited the Eastpointe location but this restaurant also has a Chesterfield, MI location and that is where this place originated. They have been serving up their amazing dishes since 1994.

One great thing about Sugarbush Tavern is that they take pride in using items that are local to the state of Michigan.

We pride ourselves in buying local fresh food with a host of made in Michigan products such as Sanders Hot Fudge Sundaes, Traverse City Cherry BBQ Sauce, local Amish raised turkeys, and an amazing selection of local craft beers to name a few. (source)

If you love ribs you might just want to stop in and give theirs a whirl. They have award-winning ribs that were voted best in Macomb County. That is quite an honor, considering how many restaurants there are in the county of Macomb.

If you are local to the Detroit area, chances are you have been to Eastern Market at least once in your life. If you are a foodie like me then chances are you have visited several times. Eastern Market is a bustling area of visitors looking for the best deals on fresh produce, other food items, and flowers. Through Groupon, we have also discovered a miraculous place nestled down there in all of the action, DeVries & Company 1887. We regularly purchase Groupons to get some good bargains there and we went equipped with one yesterday to stock up on some unique foods.

Each and every time you visit Eastern Market it is a different experience because there are different vendors.

Our trip to Eastern Market in Detroit and DeVries & Company 1887

My family of three really values these trips down to the city to explore all of the foods that Eastern Market has to offer. Yesterday it was just my husband and me on a little day-date while my daughter hung out with her friends. Our first stop was DeVries & Company 1887 and we got a wonderful haul there. Then we stopped into the sheds at Eastern Market with our canvas shopping bags and filled those bags up with a plethora of foods. When I come home from these trips I unload my bags and marvel in all of the glory of having these available in the Give It A Whirl Girl kitchen. My day is always made on these trips and I treasure them in my memory and mind.

Cheese and Meats at DeVries & Company 1887- What they are best known for

DeVries & Company is a large historic building with three levels of fun finds. Yesterday we only explored the lower level where a majority of the foods are kept. The other two levels are gift shops where you can obtain some neat things.

This place is well-known for their cheeses. We have bought some in the past from DeVries & Company 1887 and had a cheeseboard full of them at a Wine & Onesies party and the cheeses were a big hit. There are numerous to choose from here and if you like cheese there is a cheese for everyone that can be located here. Check out their Facebook page to see their cheese offerings which are regularly posted. They also have a variety of interesting meats to pair with your cheeses. You will have the best cheeseboard in town if you stop in here to stock up!

Not just meats and cheese

DeVries & Company 1887 is more than just a meat and cheese shop. This place is like a little grocery store with gourmet foods and uncommon, specialty food products. Pro tip: grab a Groupon and save some money here. You can get a $50 voucher to shop with for around $20-$25 and get more bang for your buck here.

Balsamic vinegars & oils

If you recently stumbled upon my 100th post on the blog I discussed two different, unique balsamic vinegars used to create a chocolate-raspberry nice-cream. This is the place where you can pick up some bottles of those (there are several to choose from and they are all imported from Italy). There is also a wide variety of various oils by the same brand (Fanchone Gourmet) that you can sample here. You won’t leave empty-handed after trying these out. They all have interesting flavor profiles and they will help take your cooking to the next level. The Meyer Lemon oil was fascinating and I really should have bought that one because that would likely result in the greatest chicken piccata known to man!

A few items that I took home with me

I am a curious eater and I live for the adventure of trying new foods. You all know that. That’s why my blog is titled, “Give It A Whirl Girl”. In the photos below I am letting you see a sneak peek of a few things I took home with me. I am super duper pumped and excited to experience these foods.

Raspberry salsa

I have a major mad addiction to anything raspberry flavored and I couldn’t pass up this Traverse Bay Farms Raspberry Salsa. This was my first time seeing a raspberry salsa so I had to swoop this up! My husband also talked me into bringing home some mango salasa bag of chips from Aunt Nee’s.

Hibiscus sugar

Then I spotted this Mr. Gigglepants Hibiscus Sugar. I was instantly intrigued by this sugar made by Beautiful Briny Sea. It is described as:

A fun, tutti fruitti treat for your cupcakes, French toast, fresh fruit fancy drinks, just about anything that needs a giggle.

I really don’t have a plan for this sugar just yet. It was my big splurge item at DeVrie’s. It was $11 for a 14 oz can. I will figure something out soon though. Maybe I can whip up a batch of cupcakes next week and incorporate Mr. Gigglepants into it.

Root-beer BBQ sauce

Let it be known, I think Guy Fieri is annoying as hell. (insert lols here). I spotted his Root Beer Barbeque Sauce and could not pass it up. I bought it with the intention of making some pulled pork sandwiches with it. Whenever I made pulled pork sandwiches I always cook my pork in root-beer. Sounds weird right? But it is so good!

Our Visit To Eastern Market

When you go to Eastern Market there is a ton of stuff to take in and see all around you. There are tables set up with fresh fruits and vegetables, there are people selling their homemade salsas, honey, fresh pierogi, succulents, and flowers, etc.

There are two different ways to visit Eastern Market. You can arrive early when everything is all set up and available. Or you can arrive mid-afternoon when the vendors are about to close up for the day. They want to sell what they brought with them so you will be walking by and the vendors will be shouting out deals to you. It happened to me yesterday. We came late in the afternoon and I scored some great deals. I got a carton of strawberries for a dollar. I also got some blackberries for a dollar. Those prices sure do beat the local grocery store prices.

I do realize I made a bit of a boo-boo with my photos here. I must have been just vegetable obsessed because I just realized I did not shoot any photographs of fruit and Eastern Market has a huge load of fruit to choose from at really reasonable prices. So I am very sorry about that. Next time I visit I will be sure to snap some photos of fruits.

My Erma’s Frozen Custard Review

Hard work does pay off… in frozen treat form!

We had a yard sale for the past few days and this was a great place to go to reward ourselves for our hard work. Chloe had a blast with the yard-sale (it was her first) and she was so thrilled about earning some money. It was her idea to go out for ice-cream. She insisted that she wanted to purchase her own sundae with her own money. That kid had some sheer determination to spend money last night!

Always seeking something new to experience

It was my idea, of course, to try out something new. Erma’s Frozen Custard is so conveniently located that we could actually take a stroll and walk on over there. How have I been living in St Clair Shores for so long and never ever stopped at Erma’s. It saddens me to think about how much I have been missing out on all these years. I am definitely going to visit this place one more time before they close for the season. I already know what I’m going with too~ Raspberry Truffle Parfait!

Peanut Butter Jelly TIME!

I want to discuss a bit on my parfait that I ordered, the Peanut Butter & Jelly! Let’s start with the bottom here: first up is vanilla custard, a layer of peanut butter, chopped peanuts, more vanilla custard, a generous helping of strawberry jelly, more nuts, whipped cream and then topped off with a cherry. I gotta say that I enjoyed this immensely! Yes I said that word and I reserve it for rare occasions!

What I love about this place is that they have some great flavors of dip that you can go with! I love that hard-shelled dip on my cone. They even offer a Confetti Cake dip! I am addicted to any and all things cake flavored and I know I will be going with that dip someday.

I absolutely love their creativity here and there is something for everyone.

Numerous options to choose from here! Erma’s Frozen Custard offers sundaes where you can choose one topping. These sundaes also come equipped with whipped cream and a cherry on top because no sundae is complete without that. Then they offer something called an Explosion! With the Explosion, this is where you can really let your creativity shine and you get your choice of not one, but two different toppings. More than just parfaits and sundaes!

If you are craving something besides a parfait or sundae you are in luck because Erma’s offers a variety of other things you can go with. They offer milkshakes, slushies, floats & coolers. They offer specialty desserts as well such as: Custard Puff, Brownie Delight, Strawberry Shortcake, Banana Split, and a peculiar item known as an Upside-Down Banana Split (that is something I most definitely need to try!).

My one beef about this place, speaking honestly here

These parfaits come in at $6.30 a piece. For a family of 3 to go out for parfaits here you are going to have to fork over $18.90. I am not what I would consider a stingy person whatsoever but for the amount of ice-cream and toppings that they give you for $6.30 just is not enough for me. I truly feel that maybe these should cost a little less or possibly just make the serving size larger. I will visit this place again when I have the means to, but I really believe that the price is a tad too steep. We usually do not pay that much to go out for ice-cream. We can go to Menchie’s and do big build-your-own froyos with a ton of toppings and usually only be out $15 for the visit there.

I have been trying to lose my halo halo virginity for well over a year now. A freaking year! I discovered this crazy cool concoction on Instagram one day and ever since I have been dreaming of the day that I would get a chance to give this a whirl. My day finally came at Tou & Mai in the Midtown section of Detroit, MI yesterday. This Tou & Mai review will cover my first time experiences at this neat little place that is nestled down in the Midtown area of Detroit.

I was going to share this post for my Tried It Out Tuesday feature but I am really eager to share the details with you and since it is Sunday, maybe you can head on over there today to give this extraordinary and unparalleled dessert a try! There truly is no other dessert on this planet like it.

Tou & Mai is a quaint and curious place! There is so much to see and take in, in such a small space. The first thing you see when walking in is the big white menu. I analyzed the menu online before visiting so I already knew what my strategy was when it came down to deciding and ordering. I started off with a passion fruit boba tea and of course I had to get myself the Hello Hello (their version of halo halo). Click HERE to get a better look at the menu.

I planned on getting the Hello Hello most definitely and I wanted to try out the Tricolour Tapioca but bummer… they were temporarily out of that dessert. That one sounded so fascinating to me and it will be next up on my list of to-try items at Tou & Mai. Here is a description of the tapioca dessert.

Since I could not try out the tapioca I figured I should go ahead and satisfy my boba addiction with a Sweet Tea Boba. I went with the passion fruit flavor. The passion fruit boba was the perfect amount of sweetness and the mango star jellies were a big bonus to go with the exotic flavor of passion fruit. If you have never tried passion fruit the way it can be best described in my terms is a sweet and sour exotic fruit. It has the perfect balance of both. It currently has earned the top spot on my list of favorite fruits, for the moment anyway!

What the heck is halo halo?

Halo halo is a famous dessert in the Philippines. To create it they use a purple ice-cream that is derived from a purple yam, otherwise known as ube. It also has a scoop of mango ice cream, coco de nata, aiyu jellie, basil seeds, red adzuki bean, sala cider, coconut milk, condensed milk, wafer roll, and toasted candied coconut. Wowza! That sure is a lot to take in and process right? Google might just have to be my friend here to tell me what exactly it was that I ate! Let’s explore this a little bit more!

This was my first time trying ube and when you put that together with all of these other unique ingredients you get one hell of a memorable dessert!

Having actual beans in my dessert was also another first for me. They include red adzuki beans in this dessert. Odd huh? These are sweet red beans and they are a magnificent source of protein! A one cup serving of these beans is a whopping 39 grams of protein. I would say they use about a quarter cup in their Hello Hello. I enjoyed these beans immensely!

For the next ingredient Wikipedia sure came in handy so I included that information as a quote directly from he source.

Nata de coco is a chewy, translucent, jelly-like food produced by the fermentation of coconut water, which gels through the production of microbial cellulose by Acetobacter xylinum. (source: Wikipedia)

This is really a complex dessert! I really had to use Wikipedia for the aiyu jellie as well since I am not familiar with it whatsoever.

Aiyu jelly, known in Taiwanese Hokkien as ogio, and as ice jelly in Singapore, is a jelly made from the gel from the seeds of the awkeotsang creeping fig found in Taiwan and East Asian countries of the same climates and latitudes. Wikipedia

Basil seeds! I did a little research and discovered that these seeds are void of calories but rich in antioxidants. They are also great for your skin and beneficial for a diabetic.

The sala cider is a fruity ingredient but I could not gather much information on that. If anyone has knowledge of this ingredient, feel free to leave me a comment and fill me in.

The Hello Hello here also used coconut milk and condensed milk. The dessert is topped with candied coconut which is sure to satisfy your sweet tooth and it also has a beautiful orange glow to it.

And let’s not forget those two wafer sticks that really stand out and scream halo halo! No halo halo frozen treat is complete without those wafers. There were two in the dessert and the three of us sharing. Joe, my husband, got left out.

More than just a place to grab dessert!

Need to do a little bit of Asian grocery shopping? You can certainly load up here at Tou & Mai. They packed in a lot of Asian goodies in this small space. My 8-year-old daughter had fun looking at all of the colorful and peculiar packaging. Anyone want to send a crisp new $100 bill my way because I sure would have a ton of fun blowing a big wad of money in this place.

Oh and macarons!

They also have various flavors of fresh macarons available at $2.49 each. I have no doubt they are delicious but honestly I felt as though the price was somewhat steep for one macaron so I passed. Bummer! The flavors did sound intriguing.

I scream for ice-cream!

Tou & Mai also has a small selection of ice-creams available for $3.29 a scoop. That price seems reasonable to me. If you are not going to go with their Hello Hello dessert at least treat yourself to some of that delish purple ube ice-cream. You won’t regret it! Then you can boast to your friends that you tried a purple yam ice-cream! Wink!

Hot drinks

The air is getting quite crisp and nippy so if you are not into cold treats on cold days they have some hot beverage options. The tea flavors are unusual and impressive. I am definitely going to stop in here on a chilly day and give one of those teas a whirl! I am all about trying new things and I love the tea flavors they offer. The only problem? Deciding on one flavor because they all sound interesting.
