bd’s Mongolian Grill REVIEW – Our Visit To This All-You-Can-Eat Stir Fry Restaurant – Sterling Heights, MI

bd’s Mongolian Grill is the place to be if you want to build your own stir-fry and be the chef of your own meal. This bd’s Mongolian Gril review covers the basics on what you need to know about dining here. You choose the meat, veggies, sauces, and seasonings. Once your bowl is complete you take it up to the big grill and watch the meal cook right before your eyes. This is a great place to dine with family and friends and your meal will definitely give you something to talk about.

I have a long, long history with bd’s Mongolian Grill. It actually used to be my favorite place to dine at while I was a teenager in the 90’s. I even had my high-school graduation in one of the large dining rooms at one of the original locations in Royal Oak, MI. When I was growing up I was fascinated with this place. Just the thought of having an empty bowl and filling it up with various meats/ seafood, vegetables, sauces, and seasonings was enough to excite the inner chef in myself.

Flash forward to a couple of days ago and it was my first visit in years since the price dramatically increased. We had a coupon for two bowls for $20 and we ordered a kid’s meal for my daughter, Chloe, as well. If you would like to locate a coupon for bd’s Mongolian Grill be sure to check your local papers because that is where I located mine. Coupons always give us a big incentive to go out to eat so I am always scouring our papers for deals.

How bd’s Mongolian Grill Works

You can check out the menu online for your bd’s Mongolian Grill location that you choose to visit. The menu is simple and to the point. At this restaurant, you get to be the chef and the creator of your final concoction, or you can view one of the menu cards and use that as a guide.

The possibilities of what your stir-fry will become are endless here at bd’s Mongolian Grill. No two bowls are ever the same!

Meat/Protein

There are several protein choices to choose from up at the serve-yourself bar. They provide everything from beef, chicken, sausage, pork, seafood, and some other options. If you are a vegan, the great news is that you can also come up with a great meal here. Just go ahead and skip the meat area. This area here also has a few noodle options available if you would like pasta in your stir-fry.

Tons Of Fresh Veggies To Choose From At bd’s Mongolian Grill

This is the area where the bowl really starts to kick into high gear that you are building. There is a large serve-yourself area that has several vegetables and other toppings to choose from. This area also includes some eggs that can be incorporated into your bowl. I always have to have my egg and I get two for the Asian dish that I love to build.

Sauces And Seasonings

Well, here is where I goofed a bit. I apologize but I did not snap a photo of the area with the sauces. I do have this photo below of the seasonings and spices and you can see all of the sauces around them. There are several sauce options to choose from here and this, to me, is what is going to make or break the dish. I actually like to scope out the sauces available before I even start my bowl so I know how I am going to include in it. There are also plenty of seasonings and spices to choose from so do not forget to season your dish. This is a pretty essential step here. A meal without seasonings is going to be bland and boring so do not skip this crucial step!

Where The Magic Happens

Here is where all of the magic happens at bd’s Mongolian Grill. Once your bowl has been built you step in line and await your turn to have it cooked on the large circular grill. There are often two people manning this station and they grill up your meal with two big metal sticks.

Our Stir-Fry Dinners At bd’s Mongolian Grill

I went with a seafood stir-fry for myself. I used shrimp, scallops, and krab as my protein and I added quite a bit of veggies to mine and also used the peanut sauce, which I later discovered is not gluten-free! There are many gluten-free options here but please check the nutrition facts so you are familiar with what is and is not gluten-free!

This was a very scrumptious dish at bd’s Mongolian Grill, but if I were to critique anything here it would be the size of the seafood. The shrimps are microscopic in size and the scallops are so tiny. It would be wonderful if they could provide some shrimp and scallops that are larger in size, the bigger the better is what I say!

The meals come with your choice of white rice, brown rice, or tortillas and I ate my dinner with the brown rice. If noodles are more your thing be sure to add some at the first station where the meats are.

My husband, Joe, had a spicy steak stir-fry and he placed his inside of some warm tortillas and ate his meal as a fajita dish. I sampled a bit of his meal and it sure was spicy so be cautious when seasoning your meal here. A little bit goes a long way with the hot and spicy seasonings.

My daughter really enjoyed the sweet and sour chicken dish that she whipped up. I also tried a bit of her dinner and was quite impressed by how well she did! bd’s Mongolian Grill has some really wonderful Asian sauces, such as the sweet and sour. We all joined the Clean Plate Club and left all satisfied.

All-You-Can-Eat Soup & Salad Bar

A soup and salad bar is also included with your meal and I believe that they have a pretty decent salad bar here at bd’s Mongolian Grill. I helped myself to a bit of soup and salad before going up for my main course. Often times at restaurants these areas can be messy and just icky looking but that is not the case here. They have a very attentive staff that is constantly upkeeping and maintaining all of the serve-yourself areas. I was very impressed with how neat and tidy these areas were.

bd’s Mongolian Grill Is Also Kid-Friendly

This is a great place to take an older child so they can experience the thrill of creating their own meal and they get a kick out of watching the meal cooking at the large grill. Kids that are 3 and under get to eat free and children that are the ages of 4-10 get to have unlimited soup and salad plus one bowl of stir-fry. If you have yourself a picky child and they are not interested in create your own stir-fry there are some children’s entrees available on the kid’s menu.

Chloe is 8 years old and this was her first visit there where she got creative and created her own bowl all on her own. The last time she dined at bd’s Mongolian Barbeque was when she was only a wee little toddler and that was when the Roseville, MI location existed (which no longer does). This is a great place to take an older child and she had a great experience creating her meal and watching her dinner cook at the large grill that is center stage at this establishment.

Appetizers at bd’s Mongolian Grill

We skipped out on ordering an appetizer but bd’s Mongolian Grill does have some delicious appetizers available to enjoy before you hit up the serve yourself area. Appetizers available include:

  • Crab Rangoon
  • Eggrolls
  • Potstickers
  • Jalapeno Mozzarella Sticks
  • An Appetizer Sampler (choose 3 items)
  • bd’s Famous Fried Rice Side

Drinks at bd’s Mongolian Grill

bd’s Mongolian Grill has a large variety of beverages to choose from. The have alcohol and non-alcoholic drinks available and the options can all be viewed on their online menu. They have a Coca-Cola Freestyle that can create several different drink options:

  • 70+ low/no calorie choices
  • 80+ unique drink choices
  • 90+ caffeine-free choices

I ended up going with a raspberry Powerade Zero because two fountain drinks were included with our 2 for $20 coupon. I don’t ever order soda with my meal and it was nice to have some non-soda options during my visit.

If you want an adult beverage to go with your stir-fry there are plenty to choose from and the Sterling Heights location does have a Happy Hour Monday – Friday 3 PM through 6 PM. Happy Hour specials include:

  • Half Off Domestic Beer
  • Half Off Wine
  • $2 Off bd’s Hand Crafted Cocktails

Food Allergy Information

If you have any food allergies please view the nutrition information online so you know ahead of time what foods contain gluten, etc. If you are following a gluten-free or vegan diet, bd’s Mongolian Grill has a ton of options to choose from. It is just a good idea to be aware before you start building your bowl. If you have a food allergy be sure to let the cooks at the grill aware because they will use different sticks to prepare your dinner. This also applies to vegetarians and vegans. If you would like your meal cooked with sticks that have not had contact with any animal products they will be happy to cook your meal with different sticks.

Final thoughts

Dining at this restaurant is always a guaranteed great time. I love the wide variety of options here for building my own stir-fry. bd’s Mongolian Grill allows you to be creative and unleash your inner chef. This is a great place to go if you want a unique dining experience with family and friends. I feel that this is a great destination for big events too such as birthdays, etc. If your meal is disappointing here it is usually you who is to blame (unless the meal gets burnt). When you are in charge of all the ingredients you are the creator. So if you are unfamiliar with how to create a great dish I would recommend using one of the many recipe cards as a guide. My family had a great time here a couple nights ago and as we left we all agreed that we are looking forward to coming back soon for the bd’s Mongolian Grill experience again.
